Windows XP Reaches The Finish Line
The support Microsoft has been providing for Windows XP Service Pack Two is now coming to an end. Security bulletins, which usually arrive on Tuesdays as they are available will discontinue. The expired support for Windows XP now moves Microsoft focused toward Windows 7. While Windows XP has lived a long and fruitful 10 years plus, it is now time for the remaining users of Windows XP to migrate towards Windows 7 and its enhanced security capabilities. Users who do continue to employ Windows XP will do so using an operating system that will become less and less stable and increase in the number of vulnerabilities. It will also mean organizations will not receive any more security updates, the Windows XP hot fixes will end, and the product development resources from Microsoft will discontinue. Businesses still have the option of using service pack three, but Windows 7 is still the best bet.
Organizations still using Windows 2000 will have no recourse but to move forward to Windows 7. A statement from Microsoft sums it up quite nicely. “Products that are no longer supported risk user's system security. Microsoft advises their user base to move to the latest service pack or product Microsoft supported before the support stopped. The latest releases, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, contain greater security with higher reliability, including environment friendly functionality, with other advantages.”
Windows 7 contains functionality including stronger device management, many performance improvements, a greater power management, a smoother User Account Control, libraries that make file organization easier, security features, support for 64-bit hardware, and a much more improved utilization of memory. Other enhanced features include the Windows Taskbar, the Windows Search, the virtualized Windows XP mode, jump lists, the user interface, and Internet Explorer version 8.
