Microsoft Operating System Downgrade Schedule Now Clear
As Microsoft recently announced the version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 beta, Microsoft also made clear and extended the other operating systems life cycles concerning downgrade rights. Previously Microsoft would not allow original equipment manufacturers to sell any downgrade rights for previous operating system versions when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 finally shipped to users. This would have meant the ability to install either Windows Vista or Windows XP on a machine that contained Windows 7 would stop.
Microsoft states with over one hundred fifty million copies of Windows 7 sold, their latest version of Windows is one of their most successful software products. Since Microsoft changed its stance and policy concerning downgrade rights, Brandon LeBlanc of Microsoft states “it assists customers that need downgrade rights in their migration planning, particularly markets that are moving forward and customers who might not utilize our volume license platforms.”
The separate original equipment manufacturer version of Windows 7 Professional and the version of Windows 7 Ultimate will still include downgrade rights to the same version of Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional. Microsoft will allow retailers one full year to sell their boxed version of a previous operating system and original equipment manufacturers can sell personal computers with a previous operating system already loaded for up to two years after a new operating system has been launched. October 22 of 2010 means original equipment manufacturers can no longer sell windows XP home preinstalled on netbooks, laptops, and other related devices. The sale of boxed Windows Vista will also come to a halt. Original manufacturers will have the ability to sell machines with preinstalled copies of Windows Vista until the date October 22, 2011.
Brandon LeBlanc also said, “Most customers are moving to Windows 7, and personal computer manufacturers are providing personal computers and other devices with Windows 7 already installed, and business customers have said removing downgrade rights to Windows XP Professional will be confusing, as these rights would be made for newer personal computers with Windows 7 and delivering a mixed environment with personal computers that have various user rights based on when they were purchased would be difficult to manage. Looking ahead, businesses can continue buy newer systems with user downgrade rights to Windows XP or Windows Vista until they move to Windows 7. Bringing rights within the Windows 7 cycle will make it far easier for customers as they migrate to Windows 7.”
